Enjoy the Toyota Prius: The Car that Started the Hybrid Movement

Almost everyone knows about and loves the Toyota Prius. This was one of the first hybrids available in the United States, and the very first one to offer practicality with seating for four and reasonable pricing. Since then, the Prius has evolved, and its lineup expanded significantly.

The original Prius hatchback is now stylish and packed with technology and features. There are also more configurations than ever before thanks to the Prius Prime plug-in hybrid, including the compact Prius c, and the slightly larger Prius v. Factor in trim levels, and you should have no problem finding the ideal Prius for your needs.

The Prius is now just like any other Toyota that you will find, although it just so happens to have impressive fuel economy thanks to its hybrid powertrain. The latest trim even comes standard with Toyota Safety Sense, including Lane Departure Alert, a Pre-Collision System featuring Pedestrian Detection and more. The exterior is sleek and bold with LED lighting elements while the interior has room to stretch out. It also boasts the latest technology, including available wireless charging for your smartphone and up to 65.5 cubic feet of cargo space.

2017 Toyota Prius: What is Updated?

For people who are only interested in the classic variation of the Toyota Prius, the 2016 and 2017 models are almost identical. The biggest difference is that while Toyota Safety Sense was optional in 2016, it comes standard for 2017, giving you better value. In addition to the features mentioned above, this safety suite includes Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control and Automatic High Beams. Therefore, you have everything that you need to prevent a collision or at least dramatically reduce your chances of getting in an accident.

People who are interested in updates to the Prius family for 2017 will notice that the plug-in hybrid makes its return following a short hiatus. Now known as the Prius Prime, this latest Toyota Prius shares many features with the regular Prius, with the exception that it has a plug-in hybrid powertrain.

The minimal updates to the 2017 Prius are somewhat expected, as this popular hybrid just went through a major refresh. About the only thing that was not new on the 2016 Prius was the wheelbase. It switched to the Toyota New Global Architecture to create a more rigid structure. In addition, the vehicle became longer, wider, and lower. The 2016 Prius was designed with snappier styling inside and out, bringing it closer to non-hybrid Toyota models. This was also the first Prius that everyone could agree was fun to drive while handling like a non-hybrid, despite getting hybrid efficiency.

The History of the Prius

When the Toyota Prius arrived just over 15 years ago, it certainly was not the most stylish vehicle on the road. Instead, this original Prius focused on practicality. It combined a 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine with a permanent magnet AC electric motor, as well as a 276-volt nickel metal hybride battery. Right from the start, the Prius was a success, but the second generation did even better. This second generation was given the liftback design that has since become iconic. As for the cargo space, it received a flat floor, making it more practical and spacious.

Toyota began to expand the Prius lineup in 2011, starting with the Prius v that featured a more practical, larger size. The Prius c went smaller and more compact, improving fuel economy. The Prius Plug-In Hybrid arrived in 2012 with the ability to go 11 miles completely emission free. The 2016 model year brought in the fourth generation, which was more efficient. It also offered two different battery packs, both smaller and lighter than before, further helping efficiency and performance.
